Texas Hold 'em

The first thing you want to know about Texas Hold'em is there are 3 different types of betting that define the 3 different types of games. They are:

  • No Limit – Players can bet as much as they wish up to the amount they already have out on the table at the time of their bet.
  • Pot Limit – A Player can bet a maximum equal to the total pot at the time of their bet.
  • Limit – There is a betting amount for each game and each round established before the game starts. A $1.00/$2.00 has a $1.00 Blind, which is the first round where betting and raises are $1.00. A Blind is a bet made before you have seen any of the cards in your hand. Bets in subsequent rounds are upped to $2.00.

In Texas Hold'em betting and dealing proceed in a clockwise direction around the table.

A game of Texas Hold'em is played like this:

  1. The two players to the left of the dealer place a 'Small Blind' and 'Big Blind' (remember a blind is betting before seeing the hand). For a $.50/$1.00 the first player bets $.25 and the second player bets $.50.
  2. After the Blind bets are placed, two cards are dealt face down to each player.
  3. Now there is a turn of betting.
  4. 'The Flop', which is three cards dealt face up in the middle of the table, is dealt. These three cards are shared by all players at the table.
  5. There is another turn of betting.
  6. A fourth shared card is dealt face up in the middle of the table.
  7. There is a third turn of betting.
  8. 'The River' as the last card is called, is dealt face up in the middle of the table.
  9. Then there is the final turn of betting.

After the betting the players pick the five cards that make their best hand. Each player has to use three cards from the five community cards in the middle of the table and both of their four face down cards. As in most poker games the winner of the entire pot is the player with the best hand.
