Poker Strategy
The best poker player keeps the goal in mind.

  • Your purpose is to beat the other players, not to get the best winning hand. If the other players fold- you take the pot.
  • Watch the way your opponents play and try to decide who is a tight player and who is a loose one. Try to perceive the game strategy of your opponent and use poker strategy to your advantage.
  • A poker player shouldn't have a regular, predictable method of playing. Try to avoid consecutive game play.

The basics of poker strategy are as follows:

You need to increase the amount of money you win or reduce the amount of money you lose to a minimum. It seems simple but keep in mind this one rule: you will lose more if you frequently call and raise bets; likewise, you will win little money if you make the other players fold before growing the pot.

The cards in your hand

Unfortunately there's a great chance that you can't improve your initial combination.

On the same token, two aces in the opening cards doesn't mean immediate raise of the bets.  In most cases if you raise the bets before the cards are dealt you opponents don't normally fold but call your bet.

Deuces or other low pairs normally never bring any profit in Hold'em.  The chances to catch another two from the five board cards equal to 4.2:1. Your chances to get it are only 19%.

If you don't have a winning combination in your hands you'd better fold and wait for the next deal.

If your cards are not bad, try to do all you can to make the pot grow as much as possible.

The more players at the table, the greater the chance is that one or more of the players have a better hand.

Bluff

Bluff is also very important in poker.  Everything possible should be done to keep your opponents from reading your cards or predicting your intentions during the game.   Successful bluffing takes you closer to the poker elite.  The objective is to make your opponents believe that you really have a winning hand and make them fold due to your bluff.  If nobody folded while you were bluffing, it means your bluff didn't go or your opponents were confidant they had a winning hand.

Keep the pot amount in mind- in the case that the pot is small- the players might fold and on the contrary if the pot is huge.

Don't bluff with a loose player- He won't fold and you’ll lose your money. Tight players tend to fold.  But be careful if this kind of player calls, he’s more likely to have a winning hand.

Learn from the Pros

Hundreds of books have been written on poker strategy, styles of poker, and types of poker. Each game plays a little different depending on the settings, circumstances, and table limits. If you're playing a low limit Texas Holdem game, then you would play a different strategy than playing in a high limit Texas Holdem game. You would also need to read about two different poker strategies. The best way to get started on improving your poker game is to pick up a good book, such as
Doyle Brunson's Super System, and start playing!
